mary on stage, take one

on to the christmas festivities.  i've done a very poor job of photography this month (like 10 pictures from christmas and none from the eve)… but here are a few from mary's christmas performance.

she was constantly singing her songs at home so we were curious to see how she would do in front of a lot of people.  she did great and loved being on stage!

the sweetness… i love her.

all of the classes did little songs but in between them all of the kids went on stage and would just sing and dance together.  luke joined mary and he loved it!  he wanted to be on stage the entire time and we kept telling him he wasn't allowed to join a random class.  but, then he went up with mary and he was goofy excited.  it was hilarious.

and then i caught this gem… way to make a mom proud.  mary is up to her knuckles in her nostril.  and this is a good example of luke's emotions while he was allowed to be on stage.

happy birthday luke!

blogging in december hasn't really happened but i will be doing some catching up today… here's a look into our december.

luke had his birthday and we celebrated at PAUD (his playgroup).  here's the birthday cake i made.

the birthday boy!

singing "happy birSday" and "panjang umurnya"

after everything was done and the kids were going home, luke went back for round 2 of cake.  and look  at all of those goods!  he got a ton of presents.

just to show the general state of my kid's cleanliness… here is luke's foot after the morning...

then we played a little bit of soccer in our front porch area and this is what luke looked like by the end of it.  i mean, how does the kid get so dirty!?!?

happy birthday to my boy… who is clearly all boy.

LUKE, photos of our 3 year old

i like to do a little photo session with my kids around their birthdays, usually with a few things that they love at this time in their life.

here are luke's 3 year old photos with a few of the things he can't live without… his guitar and his ball.

celebrate... she found her courage.

this past weekend we went to malang (the city we lived in our first two years here).  it was so nice to be there!  we celebrated thanksgiving together and we spoke a lot of english with our american friends.  :)  our kids also had a great time hanging out with their old buddies.  we stayed with some friends who have kids similar ages as ours, the kids played and we were able to have so many life-giving, encouraging adult conversations.  we felt so rested and refreshed.  thank you, mj and hayley!

on to the zoo… i decided not to lug my camera around so it's all phone pics today.  excuse the quality.

the kids loved feeding the giraffes!  they were so brave and i was so proud.

bravery isn't the first word i would use to describe mary so i was so excited when she got the courage to feed the giraffe.  and then, she celebrated herself.  love her.

side note: crocs with socks is usually not permitted in the pierce household, but mary had just gotten out of a play area where socks were required.  she really wanted to wear her new smurf socks… i let it slide this time.  :)

two little peas in a pod all weekend.  before we moved they weren't really playing together (still too much of an age difference) but this trip they played for hours together.  it was so fun for mary!  she misses her friend already.  so thankful for this sweet little friend.

the boys checking out the tiger together.  got to be honest, i don't love the glass floor with tigers underneath.  i mean, something in me just doesn't want to put my life in the hands of indonesian construction.  but, the kids couldn't resist.

taking it easy one evening watching peep and the big wide world.  and if you haven't heard of peep, you should check in out right now.  funny, educational 8 minute science videos of kids.  i often catch mary laughing out loud by herself… which is one of my favorite sounds ever.

the crab walk

luke has been sleeping on the floor almost exclusively for about a month… though on and off for several months.  it's weird, i know.  i just moved the mattress to the floor yesterday, before that he just slept on the rug.  i had tried to mattress before but he didn't want it.

in a land of many creatures, sleeping on the floor can come with some risks.  and we have a few stories to prove it.

a few weeks ago luke woke up around 5am and i went into his room to lay with him and help him fall back asleep.  he kept creeping closer and closer to me, patting me and being sweet.  then, all of the sudden i feel something on my face… and it wasn't luke's hand.  i grabbed it off my face and threw it across the room… and i could tell that it kind of flew.  i, of course, kind of freaked out and it woke luke up entirely.  i turned on the light and saw a huge cockroach!  sick, a cockroach was on my cheek!

then, today we had another occurrence.  i was about to put luke down for his nap and we were laying on his bed with the light still on.  he wanted to go get his guitar to sleep with and i just waited in his bed.  as he's about to walk back in, i look towards the door and yell at him to freeze!  don't walk any closer!  oh, there was a crab.  yes a CRAB in his room.  his room isn't close to the front door and the day before mary saw a crab on the front porch, so we're assuming that little crab has been hanging out in our house the last 24 hours and just made it to luke's room.  i can't really think about if i had already turned the light off with luke sleeping on the floor and a crab in his room.  oh my.

but, he luckily he's grown up here so he's kind of obsessed with the creatures we encounter.  i think he may become an ant scientist… his favorite activity while he's doing his business on the toilet is researching the ant activity happening in our bathroom.  he usually calls me in 4 times before he's done just to let me know what the ants are doing.  he also loves mosquitos.  he has a collection on the edge of his dresser of the ones we kill in his room every night.  he picks them up by the legs and puts them on the same corner every night.  don't worry, i throw the collection away every few days.  :)

and the moral of the story is… tomorrow we're ordering a bed for luke.

PAUDnya

the last few months i've taken photos at PAUD (luke's playgroup) in our neighborhood.  they want to do a calendar for all of the kids so they've asked me to photograph.  i'll be honest, it's not an easy task!  watching luke/handling his emotional outbreaks and photography at the same time isn't easy.  i usually leave DRIPPING sweat… like i just ran a 10k.  also, they want the photos to show a lot of kids together… and i like more of an small group/individual look because it's cleaner and shows the kids adorable expressions.   but, i'm doing my best and i know that i'll be thankful for these photos one day.

the kids with their newspaper hats on about to go on a walk.  luke wouldn't sit down because i wasn't sitting with him… and he wouldn't wear his hat.  he's got a will, i tell you!

doing their fun songs that they sing every day.  luke just started going to the circle without me… it may have been the bubbles that i promised to play with after school, but he's having fun!  :)

learning to eat a snack by themselves (typically indonesian children are spoon fed until they are about 5 years old).  luke ate the chocolate sprinkles off the bread with a spoon… and he ate only the chocolate sprinkles.

a class photo.  i mean, these kids are so cute!  the little guy on the right with the mohawk is luke's best buddy, alif.  i love him.  and please notice luke's indonesian pose.  he's touching his cheeks just like all people who are photographed under the age of 30 years old do here.  hilarious.

and luke's 2013 school picture… which happened because i offered him a piece of chocolate.  i mean, when the mom is photographing 20+ kids you do what you have to.  :)  and yes, i did school pictures for every one of them.  they are adorable.

the dude with the red flag was directing traffic at a busy intersection, it's a self-made job.  the day before he had on a full santa outfit… i'm not sure what the deal is with him.
my very creative, pretender… my trash is her treasure.
this ONE tazmanian devil slipper was given to us by a neighbor.  i appreciate her generosity and friendliness, but i kind of hate stuffed animals.  and well, this is goes way beyond the basic ones that i consider space takers.
pizza night!
